Social Support Does Help

Evidence links the adequacy of social support to amelioration of developmental crises and to the attenuation of stress effects (Gottlieb) including the stressful life event of childbirth.  It is reasonable, then, to propose that availability of social support will facilitate responsive mothering, particularly under stressful conditions, and thereby encourage secure infant-mother attachment. (Bronfenbrenner 1979)
