Online social networking and support is often a predominant mode of social support for many of us as busy parents with young children. Even so, be sure to carve out face-to-face group time too because online is swell, but it’s missing a few important ingredients. In addition to extra boosts of calming oxytocin, face-to-face social support is important for many other reasons having to do with the nature of our being three dimensional physical, sensory rich beings. As social animals, we use and benefit from the use of all five senses in our communications. Wellman and Wortley (1990) found that females tend to exchange verbal and nonverbal messages of emotional support, while males tend to give support by way of doing instrumental activities to assist others. Such emotional support and instrumental activities may potentially be less available through online discussions among relative strangers, no matter what else the benefits might be. Go online this month, find your local groups and plan to attend!
